Pocket Rogues is a 'roguelite' with a top-down perspective, in which players control an adventurer who will have to go deep into a dangerous dungeon, from which no one has ever returned. Your goal, of course, is to prove that a true hero can descend to the depths of the cavern and return safe and sound. But of course, hundreds of enemies and traps will stand in your way.
The controls in Pocket Rogues are very simple: on the left side of the screen you will have the virtual movement stick, while on the right side you will find the action buttons. With the warrior, for example, you will have two attack buttons (normal and strong) and a button to use the shield. If you choose the mage, however, you will have two buttons to cast offensive spells and one button to invoke a defensive power.
At the start of a new game you can choose between three different character classes: the warrior, the mage and the archer. Each of the classes offers a totally different style of play from the others. With the warrior, for example, you will have to try to charge quickly at the enemies; while if you play with the mage it is important not to let anyone get too close.
As you play, advancing and picking up coins, you will be able to unlock a lot of additional content in your base of operations. Among the unlockable elements are new skills that you can equip your heroes with, but you can also get new additional character classes, each with their own skills.
As in any good 'roguelite', Pocket Rogues settings are procedurally generated, so you never play in the same dungeon twice. Each time you enter a new level you will have to face a different challenge. And thanks to the large number of enemy types that you can encounter, you will never know what you will find when you descend to the next level of the dungeon.
Pocket Rogues is a very fun 'roguelite', offering a challenging and addictive gameplay experience, reminiscent in some aspects of the great Gauntlet. An outstanding title, which has one of the best sections of configuration options that you can find in a game for Android: you can choose the resolution, change the controls, enable or disable more than a dozen gameplay options, and even adjust the type of camera you want. An example for other games to follow.
